1880 Census - John A. Taylor Family - Harrisville, Utah

Moving back another generation!

On my way back from a meeting earlier this week I got a chance to stop by the local Family History Center for about 1/2 hour and pull up some documents I had searched for at home. Since Ancestry costs money, and I'm cheap, I just do the search at home, narrow down which entries I think might be close, then add it to my to-do list. When I get a chance to go to the Family History Library or a Center I just pull out my to-do list and gather up the documents.

Here's the 1880 Census for William Taylor's family when he was a child. His father John and mother Hannah and his siblings.

Interesting:

• Both William's mother and his wife Ada's mother are named Hannah. 
• I now have four of William's siblings added to my tree, as well as birth places for his grandparents.
• All the documents I have for William have different birth years, 1870, 1871, even 1884 (although I think that last one was from another William Taylor - its from a family search tree).

Interesting:

• William L's birthplace is listed as Utah, but in the 1900 census it was listed at Idaho. I'll have to try to confirm one or the other.
• Edith is listed as a servant at home. Is she filling in for her mother who passed away not quite a year prior? Is she paid for this "employment"?

Interesting:

• There is another Taylor family on this same page. I believe it to be William's father, John.
• I believe that William and Ada's birth years are listed incorrectly. Otherwise, William would have been 12 years old when Pearl was born, and Ada would have been. Besides, their ages don't match either. I'd sooner believe that Ada was actually 27 years old in 1900.

Ada Rose Taylor - Death Certificate

According to the gravestone, Ada died the same day as her daughter Hannah. Let's take a look at Ada's death certificate.

Interesting:

• Her name is listed at the top as Ada Ross, but it is Ada Rose and you can tell that looking at her name in the actual certificate.
• We get her birthdate and parents names. Her daughter appears to be named for her mother Hannah Maria Harris.
• The last names lead me to question if her relatives had anything to do with the settling of Harrisville or Taylorsville which are both only a few miles from Plain City where she lived with her husband. He also had the last name Taylor so perhaps his family was connected to the settlement as well.
• Now I get a confirmation of my suspicions. I knew Ada died the same day as her baby who was still born. I assumed Ada died because of complications due to pregnancy. Now we learn she died because of a Placental Hemmorhage and Placenta Preivia. Both of those are serious even today, so I can't imagine 100 years ago. Having experienced the former myself, I can sympathize with this woman and her dear child.

Hannah Maria Taylor

Last time I shared some findings on the Taylor family. Continuing that theme, I thought I better get to know Pearl's parents, William and Ada Rose Taylor.

From their tombstone, we learn that Ada Rose died the same day as her baby Hannah. So, the search began in trying to find their death certificates. I couldn't find one for Hannah, and then I thought... since it appears that she died the day she was born, with only the one date on the tombstone, maybe she didn't have one. So I looked for a birth certificate instead.

Interesting items:

• While her name is listed as "Hanna Maria" on the birth certificate, the tombstone lists "Hannah" which I think is more correct since I found out later that was the spelling of Ada's mother's name.
• Hannah is the ninth child, but only seven are living, so I know I have to look for 8 more children, 7 since I already know about Pearl.
• Hannah was not born prematurely but she was Stillborn.
• The doctor who filled this out crossed out Ada's last name "Taylor" thinking it wasn't her maiden name. But it was...they both had the last name Taylor.
• I'm fascinated by the date, 9/9/09 and that Hannah was the 9th child.

Learning about the Taylor's

I'm continuing my work on the Lund family, but now I'm focusing on the next two generations...particularly the wives and their families. Today, during naptime, I chose to research a bit more about Edith Pearl Taylor's family (she went by Pearl). Here was all I had to go on:

Grandma Pearl was born about 1892 based on her marriage certificate. She was married on 18 Jan 1911 to Victor Erastus Lund. According to my MIL her father was William and her mother was Ada. She lived in Plain City, UT and died when my husband was a young boy. That's it!

First, I hoped to verify the dates for Pearl's birth/death. Since I knew that Edith died in Plain City, I searched for her gravestone on FindAGrave.com.

I think their children's names are listed across the bottom, but it's difficult to read. I'll have to go see it in person sometime. What was really helpful on the FindAGrave.com website was the "family links". There I found her parents - William and Ada Rose. Their gravestone also gave me a lot of new information.

In addition to the gravestone, another user "Burnt Almond Fudge" added the picture of William's Death Certificate. So I tracked it down myself. With these three finds, I now have a lot more information about Pearl and her parents...in fact, I now know her paternal grandparents' names. Score!

Learning more about James K. Harvey

The Lund Family book is complete...thus the quiet blog. I've focused all my energy on getting that done, and then took a few weeks off. Well now I'm back and decided that the next book will continue where the first left off. Since The Lund Family focused on the Lund's immigration to America and concluded with Mathias and Pauline, the next will continue with the Victor-Edith and Eugene-Alene generations.

Alene Anderson, Troy's paternal grandmother, was married three times.
All I know about her first husband is -

Married: 1 June 1939 to Alene Anderson
This comes from Alene's own "Book of Rememberance"

According to Brent, Alene's son, she divorced James a few years before she married his father Eugene in 1946. So, my search begins for James Harvey. Unfortunately, since he was born after 1911 his death certificate is not available online. I did a general search on FamilySearch.org just to see what was out there. I found one hit that looks promising:

I believe this to be the correct James Harvey and this gives me a bit more information about him including his birth and death dates and next of kin. I'm not sure if Marietta Harvey is his wife or mother. I also need to find a marriage record for James and Alene.
