Marriage Certificate - Genival and Deolinda de Macedo

I have a rediculously huge stack of documents and pictures to scan and transcribe, so I thought I better get started. This is a copy of my father's parent's marriage certificate.
Genival and Deolinda - 1984 - Sao Marcos, Brazil
  • I love how they listed the exact time of the wedding - "ten hours and twenty five minutes".
  • The witnesses, according to my dad, are my grandmother's uncle and his wife.
  • I thought it was interesting that my grandmother was listed as being born in the "Federal District" until I remembered that Rio de Janeiro was the capital of Brazil at the time. Now the capital is in Brasilia, many hundreds of miles away.
  • My grandfather is listed as a machinist. He was a navy man all his life, so I guess he was a machinist for the navy. I never knew that.
  • My grandmother is listed as a public worker. She was an accountant for the city of Rio de Janeiro, I remember her telling me she was the first woman to have that job. She also talked about the computers they had in the late 40s and early 50s that would take up entire rooms. Now, she's on facebook. Go figure!
  • They were living on the same street. The story goes that they met when grandma was 13 years old and grandpa was 19. She was just the neighbor girl. They didn't start dating until she was 18, which would have been just after my grandfather returned from serving in WWII - in which his ship was sunk (!!), or so the story goes.
According to Google Maps, they lived 98 m away from each other, which would take 15 sec to drive in a car. Unfortunately, there was no street view available for this part of Rio de Janeiro.

George M Draney Household - 1930 US Census

The 1930 Census for George Melvin Draney's family brings up a few items of interest.

At this point, the family has moved to 2538 ½ Wall Avenue which is just across the street from the Union Station (railroad). That is interesting because the Draney's now have a lodger, one Willie Johnson who is listed as a Cook for the Railroad Diner. This is also the first time I've come across "negro" for color or race. I want to research more about Willie and find out how he ended up in Utah from Arkansas.

Another item of note - Both Myrtle and George are listed as 10 years old. However, if you remember from the 1920 census, Myrtle is listed as 1 11/12 years old but there is no George listed ... so, they aren't twins. In order for them to both be 10 years old they would have to have been born within 12 months of each each other. Looking closely at the age listed for Myrtle, it appears the enumerator wrote over what was there with a 10. I believe it originally said 12.

Here's my reasoning:

  • If Myrtle was 1 11/12 on 20 Jan 1920, at the time of the 1920 census, that would mean she was born between 21 Jan - 20 Feb 1918. This would make her just over 12 years old on 14 Apr 1930, at the time of the 1930 census.
  • If George was 10 years old on 14 Apr 1930, at the time of the 1930 census, then he would have been born between 15 Apr 1919 and 14 Apr 1920. However, since he wasn't listed in the 1920 census, he would have to be born after 20 Jan 1920. So, he was born between 21 Jan 1920 and 14 Apr 1920.

I will have to search for birth certificates for all these children, but am particularly interested in what they will reveal for Myrtle and George.

George M Draney Household - 1920 US Census

Moving forward in time, let's take a look at Annie (Lund) (Draney) Wheeler's children. Starting with her oldest son George Melvin Draney (b. 19 Dec 1891, d. 21 Dec 1943).

George is Diderich's oldest son's (Hans Peter), oldest daughter's (Annie), oldest son. This makes him Troy's second cousin, twice removed. I love the relationship chart in Roots Magic! It makes the relationships so much easier to see.
I'd already found George in the 1900 and 1910 Censuses living with his parents. By the 1920 census he is now 28 years old and married.

He is living in Ogden, at 2868 Grant Avenue (which is now a storage place) and he and his wife Josephine have two daughters.

Wheeler Household - 1920 US Census

As I mentioned yesterday, I had yet to find the Wheeler's in 1920. Well...here they are.

Interestingly, Lavon (who is Merratta Lavon Draney) is listed as a "daughter-in-law" but she is in fact a "step-daughter" - being Annie's daughter from her first marriage.

Also interesting, Joseph is an Auto Mechanic. In 1920. I think that's pretty cool.

One last note - Annie's mother is listed as being born in Denmark. Every other document I have for her lists her mother's birth place as Norway. Perhaps one of her step-children answered the questions and didn't really know.

Annie Emelia (Lund) (Draney) Wheeler - 1940 US Census

Continuing my research with Annie, I've pulled up the newly released 1940 US Census for Plain City, and there she was!

Interestingly, she reported her age (I know that she reported because she has an (x) next to her name) as 70,  but the birth date I have of 19 April 1870 would make her 69 years old. She would have been just over a week shy of her 70th birthday. I wonder if she rounded up on purpose.

Also, she reported her highest education as 8th grade. I wonder if the Plain City School has old records I could look at...wouldn't that be awesome?!?

Finally, I'll have to look into the farm schedules for 1940 and see if they still exist.

Annie lived to 1852 so she would appear in the 1950 census. I'll have to wait another 10 years to see that. Oh, and apparently I didn't find her in the 1920 census yet - I'll have to do that next.

Frederick Wheeler Household - 1930 US Census

On Annie Lund Draney Wheeler's death certificate I discovered her second husband - Frederick Wheeler. Then I decided to find their family in the 1930 US Census.

Frederick was 70 years old and she was 59 years old. The son listed, Jospeh E., I believe to be from Frederick's first marriage. Annie did have a son Joseph from her first marriage, but he would have been 37 at the time of this census. This Joseph is listed as 27. Could it be an error? I couldn't find a birth record for a Joseph Wheeler using the name search on Utah State Archives. I'll have to keep digging.

Death Certificate - Lindalva Ferreira (da Silva) Lima

In trying to clear up the mystery of my Grandmother's age at marriage, I am going through what I know and deciding what my next course of action should be.

I have scanned and now transcribed/translated a notarized copy of her death certificate I received from my parents. This doesn't list her birth date but does give her age as 64 years old. Since she died on 6 Jun 1999 that would mean she was born between 7 Jun 1937 and 6 Jun 1938. I have her birth date as 7 Oct 1934 which doesn't fall in that range! With that birth date range it would mean she got married at 12-13 years old...not likely!

How old are you grandma?

I don't know who the informant is - Jose Feodosio da Silva ... he is not in the database I received from my father, so I'm not sure how accurate the information is as pertains to her age.

Death Certificate - Annie Emelia Lund

I'm still working on the descendancy for Didrich and Karen Lund. The Jensen's (their oldest daughter's family) are taking a time-out, so I've shifted my focus to their oldest son, Hans Peter Funch Lund and his descendants.

I found the death certificate for Annie Emilia Lund (Draney) (Wheeler) on the Utah State Archives website.
For a better idea of how she connects to my husband, Troy, here's the relationship chart -
So, Annie is Troy's First Cousin, 3 times removed. Their common anscestor is Didrich and Karen... Troy's 3rd great grandfather and Annie's grandfather.

It is interesting to note that Annie is the daughter of Hans Peter and Bertha. Hans died young, in Sept 1872 at the age of 28, leaving Bertha with two young daughters - Annie (age 2) and Mary (not quite 1 yo). Mary died that same year, in Nov of 1872.

Then, Bertha married Hans' youngest brother, Willard Richard Lund and had two more children with him.

So, Willard was Annie's step-father/uncle and her half-brothers were also her cousins!!!

Anyway, on to her death certificate:
