John Ammon Taylor - photos

A few weeks ago I went to the local Family History Center to download some records from Ancestry.com. While doing that I ran across some user uploaded photographs of John Ammon Taylor.

I would love to know if the that is in fact John's signature or if someone just wrote his name under the picture. I'll need to go back to the FHC and try to contact these users.

Interesting:

  • I'm sure I've seen Ellen's father's name in my research into the Lund family from Bornholm. It will be interesting to see if there are more connections.
  • Ellen gave birth to a son on Sept. 12, 1905. Since her fever lasted for 10 days, it appears to have been complications due to childbirth. Such a common trend among women of the time. (ETA: according to Midge - "The fever listed on the other one is puerperal fever. It is also known as childbed fever & sadly is usually a result of bacteria introduced by the doctor or midwife assisting with the delivery. They didn't understand the need for good handwashing & sterilizing instruments. With all the open blood vessels during childbirth, it would lead to an overwhelming infection also known as blood poisoning."
  • William Taylor, Ellen's brother-in-law was the informant. He would lose his own wife Ada in childbirth only 4 years later.

Interesting:

  • We don't get John's birth year or age. I wonder who was reporting this information to the enumerator.
  • At this point, the farm was mortgaged. By 1910 it would be owned outright.
  • I believe the fourth son listed should be spelled Ether...possibly an enumerator error?
  • If you'll remember from the 1910 census, only one son was living at home. His name was Elmer and he was 18, so born about 1892. He should show up on this census but doesn't. Age wise it looks to be Lester, but Elmer and Lester are quite different names. Are they both really sons? Could one of them be a nephew or even a grandson?

Interesting:

  • John died one day after his 75th birthday.
  • Listed as married but his wife died in 1916, according to his gravestone.
  • His parents birthplaces, in addition to being misspelled, are inverted, maybe. His census records list his Father from Kentucky and his mother from Pennsylvania.
  • ETA - According to Midge - "Apoplexy is the same as a stroke. Test confirming diagnosis looks like paralysis. They had few tests available to them back then but paralysis either complete or one sided is classic. More of a symptom than a test but I think that is what it says."

Interesting:

  • This document verifies the birth years for both John and Hannah.
  • Hannah is spelled with one n but we now get a middle initial of "A".
  • A new son! Elmer appears to be the youngest of the children. We also learn that Hannah had 10 children and that 9 are living. Adding Elmer to the list I already have brings me to 6 children. I have 4 more to find.

Since the 1890 Census is no more, I'll have to track down the 1900 census to see if I can find more children.

1880 Census - John A. Taylor Family - Harrisville, Utah

Moving back another generation!

On my way back from a meeting earlier this week I got a chance to stop by the local Family History Center for about 1/2 hour and pull up some documents I had searched for at home. Since Ancestry costs money, and I'm cheap, I just do the search at home, narrow down which entries I think might be close, then add it to my to-do list. When I get a chance to go to the Family History Library or a Center I just pull out my to-do list and gather up the documents.

Here's the 1880 Census for William Taylor's family when he was a child. His father John and mother Hannah and his siblings.

Interesting:

  • Both William's mother and his wife Ada's mother are named Hannah.
  • I now have four of William's siblings added to my tree, as well as birth places for his grandparents.
  • All the documents I have for William have different birth years, 1870, 1871, even 1884 (although I think that last one was from another William Taylor - its from a family search tree).

Interesting:

  • William L's birthplace is listed as Utah, but in the 1900 census it was listed at Idaho. I'll have to try to confirm one or the other.
  • Edith is listed as a servant at home. Is she filling in for her mother who passed away not quite a year prior? Is she paid for this "employment"?

1900 Census - William Taylor Family

Interesting:
  • There is another Taylor family on this same page. I believe it to be William's father, John.
  • I believe that William and Ada's birth years are listed incorrectly. Otherwise, William would have been 12 years old when Pearl was born, and Ada would have been. Besides, their ages don't match either. I'd sooner believe that Ada was actually 27 years old in 1900.

Ada Rose Taylor - Death Certificate

According to the gravestone, Ada died the same day as her daughter Hannah. Let's take a look at Ada's death certificate.
Source: State of Utah, Utah Death Certificates, 1904-1956, Entry no. 22738, Ada Rose Taylor death certificate, 9 September 1909; digital images, Utah State Archives and Records Service, Utah State Archives (archives.utah.gov : downloaded 30 January 2012); Series no. 81448.

Interesting:

  • Her name is listed at the top as Ada Ross, but it is Ada Rose and you can tell that looking at her name in the actual certificate.
  • We get her birthdate and parents names. Her daughter appears to be named for her mother Hannah Maria Harris.
  • The last names lead me to question if her relatives had anything to do with the settling of Harrisville or Taylorsville which are both only a few miles from Plain City where she lived with her husband. He also had the last name Taylor so perhaps his family was connected to the settlement as well.
  • Now I get a confirmation of my suspicions. I knew Ada died the same day as her baby who was still born. I assumed Ada died because of complications due to pregnancy. Now we learn she died because of a Placental Hemmorhage and Placenta Preivia. Both of those are serious even today, so I can't imagine 100 years ago. Having experienced the former myself, I can sympathize with this woman and her dear child.
