Birth Record - Genival Marinho de Macedo

Since looking at my Grandfather's death certificate I thought I should try to track down the other "documents" of his life. First, I decided to find his birth record.
Source: Family Search, "Brazil, Catholic Church Records," digital image, Family Search (familysearch.org : downloaded 13 September 2011), Christening of Genival de Macedo, 8 Apr 1921, Sao Sebastiao, Picui, Paraiba, Brazil, page 32, entry 76; from dioceses and local parish archives throughout Brazil.

Transcription:

Translation:
On the 8th of April of nineteen twenty one I solemnly baptised Genival, born on the 1st of April of the same year, legitimate son of Antonio Avellino de Macedo and Leonizia Marinho de Macedo. The godparents were Abdias Genuinro de Farias and Celidonia Marinho de Fairas.
For the record I made this entry.
Father Antonio Augusto, Vicar
Married at the Archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro to Deolinda Ferreira on 2 Oct 1948.

About the side note: I thought it was interesting that the priest went back and noted Genival's marriage to the side of his birth record. My father said that since Genival's mother died when he was a young child he was raised by another woman and when he joined the military he gave his name with that woman's maiden name as his middle name (which is the Brazilian naming custom) to honor her. When he went to marry my grandmother the name he gave was different than what was on his military records so the priest requested a copy of his original birth record to verify who he was. So, when the priest in Picui looked up his birth record he noted to the side that Genival married Deolinda.

I know my Grandfather was a navy man all his life and retired from the military. I would love to get access to his military records and corroborate all the stories he told us when we were kids. According to grandpa, during World War II his ship was sunk twice...he even had a wicked scar on his arm to "prove" it. I'd love to find the records that show him as assigned to those ships and records of what happened to those ships...perhaps even photographs. I may have to assign this out to my grandmother since she is in Rio and may have to go to some repository to get those documents.

Confirmation Record - Peder Jensen

Oh, these Jensen's! I have a few additional records for them, and then, I hit a brick wall. So, I'll post what I have so far and then may have to focus my efforts elsewhere for a while.

I have found Peder Jensen's (b. 1839) Confirmation record in the Nylarsker parish, Bornholm, Denmark:

[my comment: It seems like the "8" which descends the line is a kind of abbreiation, signifying that "now comes the address". Farms in Bornholm seemed to have some kind of numbering system, and I believe it possible, that Christen Jensen is living in 25 S??gg[rd?]. Not having any better way to show, I will use [8] to show]

[comment: The pastor has forgotten to place the entry in chronological order. This would explain the NB in front of the name in the first column]

Interesting:

  • From his christening record I found his parents names - Christen and Kristine.
  • The physician administering his vaccine doesn't match what I have from his marriage record. Here it states "Grove" but his marriage record says "Zahrtmann". Most of the other confirmants on this page were vaccinated by Zahrtmann...I wonder if this is the time period when the physician changed and the priest may have made an error. Then again, Peder's entry is out of order so perhaps "Grove" was the correct doctor.

Cleaning up and Organizing

The Jensen family is giving me a bit of trouble, so I'm taking a break from them. I have a few records still to transcribe and I'll be sure to post them. For now, I thought It might be good to go through and organize my database and sources. I have so many files and folders that its starting to get a bit unwieldy. First, I'll go through and make sure all the files follow my new naming conventions. I'll also go though and be sure that all documents are transcribed and facts cited in the database.

In starting this process, I came across some 1900 US Census records I've collected but haven't done anything with! First up, the William G Warner Household.
Source: 1900 U.S. Census, Uinta Precinct, Weber, Utah, population schedule, Uinta Precinct, enumeration district (ED) 178, sheet 14, dwelling 224, family 224, William G Warner Household; digital images, Family Search (FamilySearch.org : downloaded 7 June 2011); FHL microfilm, 1854 reels.

Instead of transcribing items in an abstract fashion, as I have in the past, I went ahead and created a form that I just have to fill in.

So you can download the Word document for 1900 U.S. Census and fill your own information.

If you'd like to take a look at the pdf for the William G Warner Household you can download that here.

In order to make online searches easier for any family members that are researching these same lines, I'll continue to write up the "abstracts" and post them along with the images, as well as linking the pdf's. It's an extra step but well worth it, I think.

Marriage Record - João de Sousa Lima and Lindalva Ferreira da Silva

Oh, the joys of FamilySearch.org ... I'm still amazed that I can look at local parish records from around the world! In this case I was looking through the digitized (albeit not indexed) images of Catholic parish records from João Pessoa, Brazil. This one happens to be for my maternal grandparents - João and Lindalva.
Source: Family Search, "Brazil, Catholic Church Records," digital image, Family Search (familysearch.org : downloaded 14 March 2012), Joao de Sousa Lima and Lindalva Ferreira da Silva Marriage Record, 30 Sep 1950; Nossa Senhora do Rosario parish, page 35, entry 131.

Transcription:

Translation:

On the thirtieth day of the month of September of nineteen hundred and fifty, in the Mother of the Rosary, as witnessed by Lacerda Ferreira and João Cabral Batista, the Reverand Frei Inocencio [ofm.?] performed the marriage rite of João de Sousa Lima and Lindalva Ferreira da Silva, the groom with 25 years of age, legitimate son of Manuel de Sousa Lima and Hosana Maria da Conceiçao, born and baptized in Cajazeiras, the bride with 17 years of age, legitimate daughter of Joaquim Pedro da Silva e Ernestina Ferreira da Silva, born and baptized in João Pessoa, residents in this parish. And, for the record, I had this record made, and I sign.

(signed) Frei Jorge [Bolchaus.?] ofm. Vigário

Interesting:
This record gives the same marriage date I have, 30 Sept 1950. However, there is a discrepancy in Lindalva's age. Based on the birth date I have of 7 Oct 1934, she would be 15 years old (about a week shy of her 16th birthday) on the date of her wedding. The marriage record states she was 17 years old, and when I asked my mother about it, she said that Lindalva was 16 years old when she got married. So, now I'm thinking I'll need to find her christening record and see if she was born in 1932 or 1933 or 1934.
